Lucky FatBird Ushers In Scintillating Snake 2013

Facebook Photos from Ronnie GohCK Chin, Tan Kim Lai, Terry Tan, David Tan

On the 3rd day of the Lunar New Year of the Snake, more than 100 Team FatBird runners and friends gathered at the Western Coastal Walk @ Labrador MRT for our annual festive Weekender Series, the FatBird Chinese New Year (CNY) Run.  Most were dressed up in auspicious red, with a few in yellow ('Emperor's Red') and white to symbolize the fortune and health we will be receiving in the year of the Snake.

After a few days of CNY feasting, many of us were looking forward to have a 'fats burning' and calorie-busting running workout in the midst of auspicious features to welcome the year of the Snake.  Well wishes of "Gong Xi Fa Cai, Xing Nian Kuai Le" rang through as fellow runners wished one another before we set off.  The first spot was "Bu Bu Gao Shen" or the ascent to good fortune in the climb up Labrador Hill, and through the tunnels before coming out along the coastal line to welcome the "Cai Yuen Guang Jing" as water signifies wealth (Shui Shi Cai) in Chinese.

The runners were in high spirits as we came to Dragon Teeth's Gate (Long Ya Men) for the shout out to be "Long Ma Jing Shen" or be healthy and strong like the dragon - as the Chinese would have it, the Snake is a mini Dragon as we bade brother Dragon farewell to welcome brother Snake to shouts of "Xing Nian Hao, Xing Nian Miao, Lai Ge Xing Nian Gua Gua Jiao!  Huat Ah!"

By the time we approached the Keppel Reflections By The Bay, many well wishes were dished out to fellow runners and walkers in the area.  We posed for yet another auspicious picture by the sailboats and seacraft as as wished for 'Yi Fan Feng Shun' and smooth-sailing for our career, health and fortune in the new year.  The security guard was kind to let us stick around for a while to take nice photos of the area, but we could hardly fit our large group in no matter the angle we approached from.

Yet more water flowed along with the FatBirds we ran along rivers and coastline to arrive at the other side of the bay.  Looking at the beautiful boats and the backdrop of Keppel Reflections, each of us picked a boat where we hope to see them grow larger and posher when we return for next year's New Year Run.  Lots more group photos ensued with shouts of auspicious greetings to the amusement of passer-bys who were on their morning strolls.

We took the Berlayer Creek back to Labrador MRT for a 7.8km (Chi Fa) or Go Forth With Good Fortune, as the first group bade farewell with well wishes.  The remaining 60% of the group went on the second leg to HortPark and the Snakey Turn for our 'She Nian Chaun Hao Yun' - Great turns of good fortune in the year of the Snake as we did the 'Snake Wave' with greetings of "Gong Xi Fa Cai" as we run up to the top.

Climbing the 'Stairway to Prosperity', we shouted "Bu Bu Gao Shen" and "Huat Ah!" as we welcomed more strokes of good fortune in the New Year.  At the top, it was overwhelming consensus to go for another 3km of 'fats burning' then we ran on to the scenic Kent Ridge Park for more 'Snakey turns of good fortune' and photos by the peaceful lake to symbolize a year of peace and prosperity (more water) for all of us and Singapore.

True to form, the FatBirds received what they wished for as we ran up yet more slopes to burn off even more fats...and as we ran, we wore very happy and satisfied looks.  The Canopy Walk overlooking the beautiful expanse of greenery showed many of us the hopes and aspirations of our people for our beautiful Garden City in the Snake Year, and that we will all work and run harder to protect and enjoy the beautiful scenic-scape in this wonderful place we call Home.

'Xian Ku Hou Tian' - Bitter First, Sweetness Followed as we reached the epitome of the Scintillating Snake run, enjoying the smooth flowing rundown and the singing of Chinese New Year songs all the way back to where we started from at Labrador MRT - 15km of sheer pleasure for good measure that we will treasure for a long time.

每条大街小巷  Every road and every street,

每个人的嘴里 Everywhere that people meet,

见面第一句话 The first few words that they will greet,

就是恭喜恭喜 Is “Happy Chinese New Year”

恭喜恭喜恭喜你呀 Gong Xi Gong Xi Ging Xi Ni Ah…

Christmas Western Explorer Run

Christmas Photo Albums @ Ronnie GohCK ChinKim LaiTick Hock

It was quite a while since our last FatBird Holiday Weekender, the Sentosa National Day Run.  True to the festive mood, the turnout was good with a number of runners decked in Santa/Reindeer/Elves hats with red/white/green themes all set for a nice tour of the Western Hills & Plains region.

After the welcome briefing and group photo, we started off the Christmas run to the chorus of "We Wish You A Merry Christmas...".  Spirits rang high as we traverse the Henderson slopes and ascended Mt. Faber hill to get to Henderson Waves.  The sporting flock sang along as we ran as a group, warming up the atmosphere, getting smiles from onlookers and park users.

The first sing-along-stop at Telok Blangah Hill had us singing to 'Joy To The World..." and having much fun with lots of chuckles whenever we lost step to the tempo from the mini-radio.  With just 2-3 runners completing the tour early, the main bulk of the revelers proceeded towards HortPark for the Gangnam-style ensemble.

One of the highlights of the run was The Canterbury estate of black-white bungalows with large swimming pools and lawns, with large trees providing good shade for the happy flock of FatBirds running along the tranquil estate.  The photographers were having a field day capturing interesting sights of the scenery and people; even animals and insects received their fair share of attention :D

After the Canterbury tour, about 20 runners went back on their own while the continuing group went on for their final highlight of the morning's tour - Kent Ridge Park via the mini-Lombard Climb.  There we had a nice rest stop, before continuing on via the Canopy Walk before descending Pepys Road and back to the start point at SAFRA MF.

The Merry FatBird Christmas Carollers

There were lots of caroling and sing-along as the Merry FatBirds' morale ran high, enjoying ourselves so much that we did not really feel the effects of the 18km of rolling hills.   With the Christmas Weekender a success, we now look forward to our next Holiday Weekender, likely to be the Lunar New Year Weekender Run - to the tunes of Gong Xi Gong Xi!

Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore (SCMS) 2012

It was the mother of all distance races in Singapore.  It was the one event our Operation Sunbird runners spent 12 weeks of structured training preparing ourselves for - The Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore (SCMS) 2012.

The group gathered early at the Shaw House area to huddle for the start, as well as take the customary pre-race group photos with the Christmas lights as backdrop.  With a slightly smaller field, this year's pre-race organization was an improvement in important areas such as baggage handling, race pen control and marshaling to the start points.

Many of the Sunbirds were real early, all having the race jitters as they tackled their maiden marathons and half marathons, while others were aiming for better performances after all the hard work and commitment they have put into the Sunbird marathon training.

The Full Marathon Sunbirds proceeded to the start line at 4:20am, and were in position by 4:30am.  We could see the official pacers with their brightly colored balloons right in front.  The Kenyan elites were seen shuttling up and down, while the local elites were lined up at the front.
The race started promptly at 5:00am without too much of a fanfare, and soon we were into our paces following our respective pacer groupings.

The morning air was rather cool.  The pathway was a lot more spacious this time round, making it less congested and easier to settle into the groove.  The water stations could do with a longer stretch though.  The first 10km went by pretty nicely as we settled into our target paces.  We gave encouragement to fellow Sunbirds, FatBirds and familiar faces as we proceeded with our respective race plans.

The Pace Groups found their rhythm and settled into target pace by the 17km mark in ECP.  The toilets were a blessing as some bloated runners made a dash for a quick release while the others continued on with their steady paces.  On the other side of the path, the first Kenyans were well on their way back towards the finish line, with the local elites giving one another a good run for the money.  We were stoked by their fluid and speedy styles that we were almost tempted to go off pace to quicken things.

The Half-Marathon went by as planned, and we were glad to get to Fort Road at 28km as we would be on our final stretch.  The goal was to survive the 'mentally challenging' Gardens By The Bay East stretch, and then hit the 35km mark with the paces being maintained.  Shotz gels were provided generously along the way, and together with the bananas, they served as our continued 'power' for the final push.

We were warmly supported by FatBird and SAFRA stations, along with rousing cheers from SgRunners and BMW, the final 8-10km was made more bearable although that would be the normal point of 'hitting the wall' and slowing down.

Partly because of the cooler weather this time round, we were able to sustain the run all the way to HeartBreak Bridge, with a final 4km to go.  Our Sunbirds (who had our fair share of slopes and hills training) were seen to be tacking the hills well, where other less prepared runners were struggling and walking up.

Once the Heartbreak Bridge was overcome, we had to contend with the 'human wall' of 10km runners converging towards the Singapore flyer towards the Esplanade.  This was the stretch which slowed us down dramatically as there were just too many walkers abreast, making overtaking near impossible.  We decided to give off a few minutes and slow jogged to the finish, but still making it within our target timings.

The finish was crowded with the FM runners sharing the same finish path as the 10km runners.  The finisher tee was a nice improvement from past year's but the finisher medal seemed to be a tad smaller.  The Cheer teams was a standout at this year's race, and we were awed by the enthusiasm of the volunteers who clapped and cheered for the finishers as we claimed our hard-earned finisher medals and tees.

The Padang was chock-full of finishers, making it rather difficult to meetup.  Fortunately we had designated a meeting point nearby to welcome our finishing Sunbirds, many whom have done so well to achieve massive PBs and excellent run performances.  There were lots of excitement as the finishing runners came through with stories of their 42.195km and 21.1km journeys, and how they overcame obstacles along the way to achieve their sterling report card.

With the online, realtime tracking available this year, the results were immediately known and we were able to track our fellow runners' whereabouts and timings on the course.  We were pleased with what we heard of the results, showing that the Sunbirds reaped a good harvest from all their hard work and dedication during the 12-weeks of structured marathon training.

Team Fatbird would like to congratulate all our runners for outdoing themselves and achieving the well regarded Marathoner accolade.  Three Cheers to all Sunbirds, and may your continuing marathon journey be ever bright and full of excitement.

We now look forward to post-race get-together over BBQ and drinks, and many more war stories and battle exchanges to be shared.
